Makukhanye ( which means ‘Let be the light’) Art Room is a Shack Theatre based in Khayelitsha, one of the biggest townships in South Africa. It was established in 2007 after experiencing the scarcity of rehearsal and performance spaces in Townships, where thousands of Black artists and others of colour gather and practice their art and heal their communities.

The theatre is run by Theatre4Change Arts Project, an Organisation led by dynamic partners; Mandisi Sindo, Zanele Azuza Radu , Mbulelo Grootboom,  Khayalethu Anthony (Nata) and Asanda Rilityana .

A little bit about their aims!

▶ To make theatre accessible to the communities and the artists in need.
▶ To use arts and culture activities as means of telling the stories of the
communities to an inclusive and diverse audience, and also as a tool to
empower our peers and fellow artists.
▶ To provide space for mentorship programmes, artistic consultations,
workshops, events, festivals and other cultural events.
▶ To heal and console communes through theatre, arts and culture.
▶ To create a home for the next generations where their art will be practiced.
